What happened to Mike Lynch’s luxury yacht that sank in minutes?

A luxury yacht owned by the family of British tech magnate Mike Lynch sank on Monday. To near Porticello, Sicily, Italy, after a severe storm. There were 22 people on board: six died, one was missing and 15 were rescued on the day of the disaster.

The fatal victims are millionaire Mike Lynch, Jonathan Bloomer, Morgan Stanley’s international director, his wife Judy, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, jewelry designer Neda Morvillo, and Recaldo Thomas, yacht chef. The body of Hannah Lynch, Mike Lynch’s daughter, was the only one that was found.

ABOUT’The luxury 56-metre yacht Bayesian sank at around 5am on Monday. The Coast Guard warned of severe weather but said conditions were more severe than expected, according to the report. ReutersCCTV footage from the port of Porticello captured the moment the yacht sank.

A case that is incomprehensible to experts

Experts say they cannot understand how a yacht of this size could sink so quickly.

Andrea Ratti, a professor of naval design at Milan’s Polytechnic University, said a boat the size of Bayes’ could only have sunk so quickly if it had taken on a large amount of water. It is thought that perhaps one or more portholes, windows or other openings could have been left open or could have been damaged or broken by a waterspout, causing the yacht to sink.

However, a British industry expert said it took several hours for the British yacht to fill with enough water to sink, making its rapid disappearance puzzling.

Matthew Shank, president of the British Maritime Search and Rescue Council, points out that the luxury yacht was the victim of a phenomenon known as a ‘black swan’, a rare and very dramatic event.

Yacht design

The Bayesian vessel was fitted with the world’s tallest aluminium mast, at 72 metres. A mast of this size means a larger surface area exposed to the wind, which could indicate a greater risk in adverse weather conditions. However, expert Andrea Ratti and civil engineer Filippo Mattioni said: Reuters that this in itself cannot be an element of vulnerability during a storm that could lead to a shipwreck.

Fire department diver Marco Tilotta said the wreckage was intact and the mast was still attached. He added that the divers were unable to inspect the mast along its entire length, but the section they saw was undamaged.

The Lynch family yacht had a retractable keel, a stabilizing structure under the hull that could be partially raised to reduce the ship’s depth when entering shallow water or harbor. Both Ratti and Mattioni suggest that the yacht may have been anchored with its keel raised, compromising its stability during a heavy storm.

Another boat weathers the storm

A neighbouring yacht, the 42m Sir Robert Baden Powell, remained at anchor and weathered the storm after its captain started the engine to maintain control and avoid a collision with Mike Lynch’s yacht.

Captain Karsten Borner said he did not know whether the “Bayesian” crew tried to start the engines. “All I know is that they were crushed by the mast in the water and sank within two minutes,” he said. Reuters.
