Porto need a win against Rio Ave this Saturday to overtake Sporting at the top of the First Football League after the Lions thrashed Farense 5-0 on Friday.
The Dragons, who have won two in as many games in the first league, are forced to win to prevent their opponents from leaving, who they will face in the next round in Alvalade, against the Rio Ave team last season. They were very close to the end of the championship, fought for self-retention, but even left the home of the “white-blues” with a score of 0:0.
In the other match of the third round, Benfica will still have to show much more to confirm itself as a contender for the title, hosting in Lux an Estrela da Amadora team that came after a heavy defeat at home to Famalicao, who in the first match of the round, beat the Eagles at the reception.
Despite beating Casa Pia 3-0 on the final day, Roger Schmidt’s men are barred from dropping points and need to combine a possible win with a performance that will appease an increasingly restive Reds fan base.
In addition to these two matches, there will also be two more games in the third round this Saturday: Casa Pia-Santa Clara and Famalicao-Boavista.
