This Saturday, the Prime Minister of Portugal asked to be commended for Europe’s relations with Africa as he participates as an observer at the 36th African Union Summit, being the only head of European government present.
“At a time when #Europe is called upon to meet enormous challenges, it is more important than ever that we continue to value our relationship with #Africa,” António Costa tweeted.
“I am participating in the 36th regular session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa as an observer,” the head of government of Portugal explained in another tweet.
On the sidelines of the work, the Portuguese official held bilateral meetings with officials from countries such as Rwanda, Niger or Madagascar.
Meetings with Angola and Guinea-Bissau are scheduled during the day. António Costa met with the President of Mozambique during the summit between Luso and Mozambique last September, and was also recently in Cape Verde and Sao Tome and Principe.
In addition to African leaders, the summit will be attended by UN Secretary-General António Guterres; Director General of the International Organization for Migration Antonio Vitorino; European Council President Charles Michel and Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh.
