Civil Protection confirms the earthquake had three aftershocks and says it does not meet the criteria “for activating special plans.”

The Civil Service this morning summed up the situation after the earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale in Portugal. National Civil Protection Commander André Fernandes confirmed three tremors after a strong quake was felt from the north to the south of the country.

The first aftershock was recorded at a magnitude of 1.2, the second at 1.1, and the third at 0.9.

Civil Protection said there was currently no evidence of personal or material damage and that the earthquake did not meet the “criteria for activating special plans”, a decision that would only apply if the recorded magnitude exceeded 6.1.

After a meeting with representatives of the Civil Protection scheduled for 9:00, the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, will be received by the President of the Republic at around 10:00 in Belém.

The President of the Republic is monitoring the situation with the Prime Minister and they will meet in Belém immediately after the “briefing” that will take place on civil protection issues.
