This Monday, Ruben Amorim received the award for the best coach in the first football league for the 2023/24 season, in which he led Sporting to its 20th national title, repeating the feat achieved in the 2020/21 season.
“We found it a bit simplistic [estes galardões individuais] when we look at the team’s performance, and that’s what we’re celebrating here. Basically, you won. [a distinção de] “The best coach is the one who wins the championship, but this award is not only ours,” the 39-year-old coach responded, citing some elements of the “Leonese” structure in his speech at the Liga Portugal Awards gala in Alfândega.
Ruben Amorim received the most votes among the coaches and captains of the 18 first division clubs in a season in which he became the youngest Portuguese coach to win the competition twice, replacing the late former national team coach Artur Jorge, who, aged 40, had won the title twice with Porto (1984/85 and 1985/86).
