Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny announced on Tuesday that he was retiring from football 18 years after leaving Warsaw as a teenager to join Arsenal and make football his way of life.
“I didn’t just make my dreams come true, I achieved where my imagination had never dared to go,” the 34-year-old commented on his Instagram account, adding that he played at the highest level and with the best players in history without feeling inferior.
Wojciech Szczesny said that while his body is still ready for the challenges, his heart is no longer ready at the point in his life when he wants to devote himself to his family, his wife and two children.
“For this reason, I have decided to retire from professional football. The end of a journey that has brought time for reflection and gratitude,” he added.
The Polish international, who has 84 caps for his country, arrived at Arsenal as a teenager from Legia Warsaw and has worn the colours of the Gunners, as well as Roma and Juventus, during his career – badges he has represented in his last seven seasons.
Wojciech Szczesny’s resume includes two FA Cups, one FA Super Cup, three Italian championships, three Italian Cups and two Transalpine Super Cups.
