Large Basque representation at the Paris Paralympic Games

Euskaraz irakurri: Euskal ordezkaritza zabala, Parisko Joko Paralinpikoetan

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will feature the participation of 21 Basque athletesone of the largest groups in recent decades, surpassing the numbers from the last four Summer Paralympic Games.

The decline in birth rates in the Basque Country suggested a drop in the number of top-level athletes at the Olympic and Paralympic events, a trend that seemed to have been particularly evident at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 event, where only four Basque athletes competed. However, this year’s figure (21) exceeds the number of participants at Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2021.

As for women’s participation, in the case of the Basque Country it remains high and is much higher than in Tokyo 2021. Paris 2024 will be the first Games in history to have complete parity in terms of athletes. Of the 21 participants from the Basque Country, nine will be women and twelve men.

Five athletes will be from Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, while Araba will have three. Another three are from Navarre and five from Iparralde.

We will have athletes in ten sports different. Wheelchair basketball is the sport with the most competitors, five. Wheelchair basketball is followed by swimming and cycling, in which we will have four athletes. Table tennis will have two and shooting, archery, sprint canoeing, boccia and triathlon will have one representative in each case.

The Opening ceremony will be held on August 28taking it beyond the limits of a traditional stadium. The Place de la Concorde and the Champs Elysees will be the setting for this innovative celebration in the heart of Paris, in which 184 delegations and around 6,000 athletes and techniciansThe aim is to revolutionise the Games and make them accessible to the general public. The competition will begin the following day, on 29 August.

Basque Team and EiTB will follow and report on what happens at the Paralympics from the capital of France.
