On Wednesday, the PS concluded that María Luis Albuquerque, the government’s nominee for European Commissioner, has a legacy of “austerity policies” and a political profile different from the priorities of the European Union, criticizing the lack of consultation with the parties.
“It is a profile that, at a technical level, may reflect what the government wants, but politically it is diametrically opposed to the options and priorities that I think the European Union will have at the moment,” Vice President Pedro Delgado Alves told reporters in parliament.
The socialist began by regretting that the decision-making process of the SDP/CDU-PP government had not involved prior consultation with the parties, which “would have been democratically healthier and more desirable.”
“Simply informing the PS a few minutes before the public announcement, in our opinion, does not meet this goal of institutional and loyal cooperation with all parties,” he believes.
According to Pedro Delgado Alves, PS leader Pedro Nuno Santos was informed “a few minutes before” of Prime Minister Luis Montenegro’s statement, contrary to what he said was the history of PS governments with such instructions.
“An option that is the exclusive responsibility and political domain of the government, but which directly, in relation to the most important thing in such a choice, namely the political options underlying this decision, is not necessarily good news or a good memory for many people,” he lamented.
The PS deputy said that María Luis Albuquerque “is directly responsible for a series of very serious measures” for pensioners, public servants or public services themselves.
“He has a legacy of managing austerity policies that in many ways went beyond what the EU stood for at the time,” he criticised.
Prime Minister Luis Montenegro announced today that he is proposing former Finance Minister Maria Luis Albuquerque as his candidate for the post of European Commissioner.
