A 40-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were arrested at Lisbon airport on suspicion of drug trafficking and 113,500 doses of cocaine were seized from them, the Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) PSP announced on Friday.
Cometlis said in a statement that they detained two passengers through the airport security and border control department at 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday.
The detainees arrived on a flight from Brazil, a police source told Lusa, without specifying the nationality of the suspects.
According to the PSP note, agents in the “first line control action, despite the existence of border crossing check conditions, following the mandatory control procedure that motivates interrogation, realized that there might be a risk” and chose “to require second line control.”
A more detailed investigation revealed that the passengers “may have been carrying narcotic products, a situation that was confirmed: 113,500 doses of a product suspected of being cocaine were hidden in their luggage,” security forces said.
After their arrest, the suspects were declared accused, provided identity and residence documents, and were taken to the Kometlis pretrial detention facility.
They were present at the first court hearing and were sentenced to preventive detention.
