“It is with deep regret that the Minister of the Interior, Margarida Blasco, and the Secretaries of State, Telmo Correia and Paulo Simões Ribeiro, learned today of the tragic accident of the crash in the Douro River of a light bomber helicopter, from a special protection device for fighting rural fires, at 12:36, near Samodains, Lamego, while returning from an operation to extinguish a rural fire that broke out in Gestaso, Baião, which injured five soldiers from the Emergency Protection and Assistance Unit (UEPS) of the National Republican Guard (GNR).
The Minister of the Interior, accompanied by the Minister of Civil Protection, immediately went to the site of this tragedy to monitor the progress of the operation and to be able to share words of consolation and solidarity with the families of the victims at this dramatic time, as well as to express deep gratitude and recognition to the teams involved in the search and rescue operations.
At this time of great pain and mourning, the Minister and the Secretaries of State would like to once again express, on their own behalf and on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior, words of solidarity and deepest condolences to the families and friends of the five GNR soldiers who died. Each of these soldiers, through their dedication, pride and commitment to their role and mission, is recognized by all as a person who chose to devote his life to the benefit of others and to whom Portugal, in these circumstances, owes a heartfelt tribute and recognition. . collective.
The Ministry of the Interior also wishes a speedy recovery to the helicopter pilot injured in this fateful and terrible accident.
