More than 30,000 fans gathered at the Estadio do Dragão this Sunday to watch the debut of the women’s football team. “Portistas, you will never cease to make us proud! In the first game of our women’s team at the Estadio do Dragão, we broke the attendance record for women’s football matches in Portugal! There are already more than 30,000 of us and many more will join us! Thank you for making history with us,” the dragons wrote on social media.
Final figures: 31,093 spectators attended the match against União de Leiria, surpassing the previous maximum of 27,221, in the classic match between Benfica and Sporting at the Estádio da Luz in the 17th round of the I League, on 26 March 2023. The third highest attendance was on 30 March 2019, when 15,204 fans attended the solidarity match between Benfica and Sporting.
The game on Sunday was a preparation for the new season and showed the blue and white team’s goal-scoring ability. They won 9-0. By the break, Porto was already leading 5-0. Before the match, the Dragons’ president went down to the locker room to encourage the players and stress the importance of the meeting. “They are going to make history,” Villas-Boas said. “Be aware of the moment you are living in,” he added. Porto will play in the III division, in Group E, along with five other teams. There are 13 groups in total, the first of which will go directly to the second stage – the three best participants who took second place will also qualify.
