This Monday, the European Commission signed an agreement with the European Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) to support EU countries in making the nursing profession more attractive.
In a statement, the community’s executive director announced that the agreement is funded by €1.3 million from a European Union (EU) programme and will be implemented over three years.
The agreement will give EU countries with the greatest needs more attention.
Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said in a statement that nurses are “the backbone of health systems and essential to ensuring patients receive professional, high-quality care when they need it.”
The aim is to make nursing careers more attractive and to be able to retain these professionals in the Union, as a significant proportion emigrate, for example to the UK and other countries outside the EU bloc.
