The Swedish government announced on Tuesday that it will abolish the green tax on air travel, which was introduced in 2018, from July 1, 2025.
The measure has been discussed for months and is the result of an agreement between Sweden’s conservative government led by Ulf Kristersson and its far-right allies, the Sweden Democrats, who will guarantee it a parliamentary majority.
According to those supporting the measure, the tax repeal is aimed at increasing air transport in the country and improving accessibility throughout the territory.
“If we want good air connections and Sweden to become an international hub, we must not give up the advantages that Sweden can have. This is in line with our long-term climate policy,” Kristersson said at a press conference.
The air tax introduced by the previous left-wing government increased the cost of a ticket depending on the distance travelled: from 76 Swedish kronor (6.7 euros) for trips within Europe to, for example, 504 kronor (44 euros) for countries such as Thailand.
The introduction of this tax brought the state annual revenue of approximately 1,800 million crowns (159 million euros).
