Colombian cyclist Daniel Martínez (INEOS) won stage 49 of the Volta ao Algarve this Sunday, finishing fourth in the individual time trial on the fifth and final stage, won by Switzerland’s Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ).
Martinez, 26, set the fourth best time of the day, 16 seconds shy of the 29.34 minutes achieved by Küng, the fastest of the 24.4 kilometers disputed at Lagoa, ahead of France’s Remy Cavagna (Soudal-QuickStep), second, four seconds. and Italy’s Filippo Ganna (INEOS), third, by 10 seconds.
Overall, the Colombian was two seconds ahead of Hour record holder Filippo Gunn, his teammate, who placed second, while Belgium’s Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-QuickStep) finished third, 15 seconds behind the winner. João Almeida (Emirates UAE) was the best Portuguese, finishing in sixth place, 40 seconds back.
The Colombian, who finished third in 2022, succeeded Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who won the race for the second time last year after a first victory in 2020.
