Item suggesting Romans used sex toys found in UK

A wooden object discovered in 1992 in the moat of the Roman fort of Vindolanda, near Hadrian’s Wall in northern England, may have been a second-century sex toy. Until now, it was thought to be a sewing tool, as it was found along with shoes and weaving tools, but a recent study showed that two thousand years ago it could have been used as a sexual object.

In accordance with BBCthe object is 16 centimeters long and this may be the first example of its kind to be found anywhere in the ancient Roman Empire. However, experts from the universities of Newcastle and Dublin do not exclude that this is a symbol of good luck or a tool for grinding ingredients.

When they analyzed it, they found that both ends were noticeably smoother, indicating reuse over time. “We know that the ancient Romans and Greeks used sexual tools. This item from Vindolanda could be an example of one of them,” said Rob Collins, senior professor of archeology at Newcastle University. BBC.

Barbara Birley, curator of the Vindolanda Foundation, where the object is exhibited, said: “It is unlikely that [este objeto] it was the only one of its kind used in this place, along the frontier, or even in Roman Britain.”
