Fernando Gomes congratulates the women’s team and praises equal opportunities

This Wednesday, the President of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) congratulated the women’s team that guaranteed their participation in the World Cup, demonstrating their conviction that “a developed, modern and fair nation should provide equal opportunities for men and women.”

“I know that the path we have taken in more than 10 years of this council’s mandate has been to create the same conditions of equality,” said Fernando Gomas in a message published by the FPF, adding: “This is a work that, by virtue of its nature, never ends, but is done in a consistent, sustainable and collaborative way.”

Fernando Gomes believes that Wednesday’s goal of reaching the finals of the World Cup “will be the start of an even more ambitious journey for Portuguese football and for all the girls and women who want to play football at the highest level.” in Portugal”.

“All future generations, I can say without any doubt, will always have as a guide a group that today honors not only the entire FPF, but all football and national sports, as well as the country itself,” he said.

The leader of the federation thanked for the commitment of all the players and the technical team led by Francisco Neto, given that the commitment and dedication of everyone “made the dream of more than three decades come true and brought Portugal to the only final phase that it lacked to play in 108 years of history.”

The Portugal women’s football team qualified for the 2023 World Cup this Wednesday by beating Cameroon 2-1 in the Group A final of the Intercontinental Play-off in Hamilton, New Zealand.

At the World Championships, which will take place in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, Francisco Neto’s men will join in Group E with runners-up the Netherlands, Vietnam and US trophy winners.
