Three activists whose personal details were wrongfully handed over by the Lisbon City Council are now asking the municipality for compensation in the amount of 120,000 euros. The case was called RussiaGate and has already been fined over a million euros, which activists consider insufficient.
In a statement cited by TSF, one can read that “the fine did not benefit any individual or entity affected by this repeated practice of abusive sharing of personal data.”
The data of the activists were transferred to the embassies and ministries of foreign affairs of the totalitarian governments of Russia and China. “Such actions by CML endanger our safety as well as the safety of our families, contributing to a general sense of fear and heightened danger, even forcing us to take heightened security measures,” they said.
The Russiagate case has been the subject of controversy and even led to then municipality president Fernando Medina issuing a formal apology.
It is recalled that the activists involved are anti-Putin protesters, the President of Russia, so they now complain that the dissemination of these data has caused “fear among many other human rights defenders who are at risk of political persecution.”
