Why was Kathy Taylor’s fight cancelled? Amanda Serrano’s latest injury and who to fight in her place

Cathy Taylor’s world title rematch against Amanda Serrano scheduled for May 20 in Dublin has been cancelled. I realizes that Taylor can still fight a new opponent that day.

In a statement, promoters Matchroom Boxing and Most Valuable Promotions confirmed that the fight “will not take place as planned” due to Serrano’s undisclosed injury.

Taylor won the first classic fight at the historic main event at Madison Square Garden by split decision to retain the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO belts.

Serrano quickly activated the rematch clause as she got closer to Taylor than any of her previous opponents thanks to a devastating mid-round attack.

In return, the Irish woman promised to take them to Croke Park, hoping to sell out tickets at the 82,300-seat stadium. That dream was ultimately shattered when Matchroom fell out with the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), which owns the stadium, over who should bear the cost of security.

Eddie Hearn eventually decided to move the fight to the 3Arena in Dublin, a much smaller venue with only 10,000 tickets available. When Hearn met with the media earlier this month, I asked him why the GAA hadn’t conceded on a promised historic women’s boxing night – he insisted he was determined not to let Taylor’s purse suffer from Croke Park’s cost increase and said it was about three times more than the cost of a fight at Wembley.

Hearn even met with UFC fighter Conor McGregor, who offered to help pay for Taylor’s move to Crocker.

It has been widely speculated that the GAA did not want to host the boxing competition as the sport in Dublin is still haunted by its past ties to a cartel led by Daniel Kinahan, a suspected crime boss wanted by the US government. In the most high-profile of a series of incidents, David Byrne was shot and killed during a weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in 2016 amid the ongoing feud between the Kinahan and Hutch organizations.

That’s why the climate in her native Ireland has never been the right one for Taylor to fight professionally. She has never been associated with Kinahan or his promotional companies, but at one time his influence was so pervasive that it would be difficult to create a map without a fighter associated with him.

But in the end, Taylor is on her way to returning home, with or without Serrano.

The alternative is that she fights undisputed welterweight champion Shantel Cameron instead.

opposing I In November, ahead of her reunion fight with Jessica McCaskill, Cameron vowed to fight Taylor in Ireland if she had the chance.

“If I can ride at 140 without any problems, then why not?” She said. “Before Katie always had something for me, I never had a profile, no world titles, she had no reason to fight me. But if I go to 140 undeniably, then I have all the belts in weight up. So, if she wants to do it for the sake of the legacy, why not try to compete for two undeniable weights – and I have something for her.

The other option is to try to move the Serrano fight back to Croke Park later this year. The All-Ireland football and hurling finals take place in July, with September being a relatively bright month for a rematch.
