Storm Freddy kills seven in Mozambique

Tropical Storm Freddy has killed seven people after it hit the country on Friday, causing severe flooding, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Thursday.

According to the organization, a total of 9,268 people were to be transferred to 26 reception centers in the provinces of Inhambane, Gaza and Sofala.

About 163,300 people were affected and 27,800 houses were destroyed.

Several supports have been announced to help with the situation.

This Thursday, the European Commission announced €200,000 in humanitarian aid to help those hardest hit by the storm.

“European Union (EU) funds will support the Mozambican Red Cross in assisting communities already affected by heavy rains and floods, as well as awareness raising and early warning activities,” he said in a statement.

The three-month project will benefit 60,000 people in the provinces of Gaza, Inhambane, Manica, Maputo, Sofala, Tete and Zambezia.

The funding is part of the EU’s overall contribution to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Emergency Response Fund.
