Poland demands compensation from Russia for cuts in oil and gas supplies

Daniel Obaitek, president of Polish state-owned energy company Orlen, said on Monday he would demand compensation from Russia for a unilateral cut in oil and gas exports to Poland.

In an interview with Polish radio, Obaitek indicated that the cessation of Russian oil sales occurred “after the visit of (US) President Joe Biden to Warsaw” and coincided with the announcement of the arrival of the first Leopard-2 tanks in Ukraine. ceded to Poland.

On February 26, Russian oil stopped flowing to Poland through the Druzhba pipeline.

Obaitek also said that a criminal case would be opened against Russia for cutting off gas supplies to Poland from April 2022.

The Polish government has expressed its intention to become energy independent from Russia by the end of 2022, but so far it has received 10% of oil from the Russian company Tafneft by virtue of a contract that is still in force.

The main reason for continuing to buy Russian oil was to avoid a fine for violating that contract, Obaitek said, but Tafneft indicated that Poland had asked to receive oil during 2023.
