The couple from Gernika formed Xabi Barandika Y Unai Lekerika clinched victory in the season two premiere of Eusko Label Jai Alai Winter Series. The triumph is not just anyone, since they prevailed over Aritz Erkiaga Y Jon Zabala, last edition champions. Although the first set was for the orange (15-10)the local pundits came back from the game and won the next two sets (9-15 and 4-5).
The Jai-Alai fronton in Gernika was overflowing with fans ready to witness the start of the most important event of the year. The match deserved nothing less, since the first winning duo of the first Winter Series and the couple formed by two Gernikarras were facing each other. Being the last Monday of October, the atmosphere in the provincial town was unbeatable.
The first set started even (3-3), but Erkiaga took command of the contest and the champion couple took the lead with four consecutive goals (7-3), reaching the break with a score of 8 to 5. Although the couple Railing-Lekerika tried to close the gap, the current Erkiaga-Zabala took the first set with authority (15-10).
The start of the second set was also even with several draws (4-4 and 6-6), but it was the locals who came into the break outstanding (6-8). On the way back from the locker room, they maintained their positive inertia, managing to widen the distance on the scoreboard (6-10) ahead. Finally, those in white won the set 9-15.
Thus, the meeting was resolved in the third “joko”, in which Railing Y Lekerika started off great (1-4)and that the set and the victory would be easily awarded, but the colorados showed that last year they did not triumph by chance and even tied the score (4-4).
The locals, however, did not despair and with a ball to the txoko of Barandikaafter sending to Erkiaga wide, they won a great victory (4-5) to the great joy of the fans.
