Figueira da Foz will host on February 12, 2023, three days before the Volta ao Algarve, an international cycling classic that will feature teams racing in the Algarve, the promoter explained on Monday to the municipal executive of Figueirense.
The director of Clube Desportivo FullRacing, the organizer of the event, told the chamber of the municipality of Figueirense on Monday that on February 11 and 12, the municipality will host “something that has not been seen in any city in Portugal”.
“Never in 110 years of cycling has Portugal hosted a world-class classic, with Eurosport broadcast to the whole world and featuring the best athletes in the world,” emphasized Carlos Pereira in a presentation to the CEO. .
The Figueira Champions Classic will be 190 kilometers long, starting in the Relogio area of Figueira da Foz and covering 14 districts in the county, with the last 90 kilometers being televised.
The main competition will take place on February 12, Sunday, but the day before there is an open race for everyone to ride partially on the same track.
According to Carlos Pereira, the event will put Figueira da Foz “at the top of the world of cycling” and will have an impact on the local economy, making the city “a tourist destination of national importance”.
According to the promoter’s estimates, about 2,000 people will take part in the two events, the budget of which exceeds 400,000 euros.
“This is a test that comes with a lot of costs and fees, but which is easily absorbed by all the returns that Figueira will receive, because the city has never had an event that would present it to the world in this way,” he stressed. .
Carlos Pereira acknowledged that the Figueira Champions Classic “will bring Algarve fame” for being “the first event of the year in Portugal, with the best in the world”.
The executive branch will vote on Wednesday, in continuation of the meeting of the Chamber, which was interrupted this Monday due to the agenda of President Pedro Santana López, the proposal to provide a protocol with Clube Desportivo FullRacing, which provides for financial support of 240 thousand euros.
