Dozens injured in 40-car crash in Hungary

At least 36 people were injured this Saturday, 13 of them seriously, in a traffic accident on a motorway about 25 kilometers from Budapest, Hungary’s capital.

Of the approximately 40 vehicles involved in the collision on the M1 highway west of Budapest, 19 caught fire, the Associated Press reported, citing police authorities.

The National Civil Protection Administration said in a statement that the fires have already been extinguished and that four rescue helicopters, as well as firefighters from several nearby towns, have arrived at the scene to help the victims.

Authorities have stopped traffic in both directions on the M1, and removal and clean-up operations will continue for the next few hours.

National Rescue Service spokesman Pal Györffy declined to give a possible cause of the crash, but a motorway company in Hungary admitted that a localized dust storm could have caused a sudden deterioration in road visibility.
