The city of Quelimane in central Mozambique has no electricity or telecommunications since the passage of Cyclone Freddy, which hit the continent for the second time last night near the capital of the Zambezia province.
“The situation is chaotic,” a TV Mozambique (TVM) reporter said over satellite.
The wind subsides, but heavy rain continues to fall, and it is not easy to move around, because there are fallen trees, as well as power poles and other buildings.
Houses, mostly precarious construction, were damaged, in addition to damage to infrastructure such as schools and medical facilities, especially roofs.
The authorities still lacked the conditions to update the loss balance, keeping the death toll registered on Saturday after a house collapsed in the village of Makival due to bad weather.
Authorities advise the public to stay in protected areas.
The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) has opened reception centers and in recent days has advised the population to leave dilapidated houses and coastal areas or areas that are usually prone to flooding.
Cyclone Freddie has already lost strength and turned into a tropical storm, but heavy rain is still expected in central Mozambique until Wednesday.
This is the second time that the weather has hit the country since the first strike on February 24, which killed 10 people in a few days due to adverse conditions.
