Gas consumption in Portugal fell by 16.7% compared to January

Gas consumption in Portugal continues its downward trend, falling by 16.7% between August last year and January this year, below the European target of 15%, mainly due to a decline in conventional use, ADENE said this Wednesday.

The data was released by the Energy Agency (ADENE), which, in its fifth progress report on the implementation of the Energy Conservation Plan 2022-2023 for the period from August to January this year, highlights a reduction in global gas consumption of 16.7% compared to the historical period. the average of the last five homologous periods.

This percentage compares with a 12.9% decline between August and December and the European Union’s (EU) target to reduce gas consumption by 15% until the end of this month to avoid supply disruptions due to geopolitical tensions. .

ADENE notes that the decline observed between August and January 2023 “strongly affected regular consumption, with a reduction of 23.4%, while in the consumption component from thermal power generation, savings were 6.5% . % verified.

Thanks to this reduction, Portugal has already achieved 77.5% percent of the target set in the Energy Conservation Plan 2022-2023 by the end of 2023 (17%), the agency adds.

Since the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) is partly dedicated to the energy aspect, ADENE also indicates that so far the measures implemented under the PRR notifications are equivalent to 33.3% of the target set by the end of 2022.

On Tuesday, the European Commission announced that it intends to extend beyond March a target for member states to reduce EU gas consumption by 15% and a commitment to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours.

The goal of a voluntary reduction in EU gas consumption by 15% went into effect last August and is expected to last until spring 2023 to increase storage volumes in member countries and provide a cushion in the face of a possible supply disruption from Russia. . . .

The goal is for Member States to reduce natural gas consumption by 15% by March 31, 2023 (compared to the historical average for this period, taking into account the period from 2017 to 2021) in order to increase the level of European storage and create airbag for emergencies.
