This Friday, the GNR clarified that it has provided and continues to provide “all necessary assistance” to three soldiers from the Beja command who were attacked in an incident on January 13, when one of them “lost part of his body.” nose”.
In an explanation issued in a statement, the National Republican Guard (NR) recalled that during a police action that took place on January 13 this year, “three soldiers of the Bej Territorial Command were attacked” and that one of them “lost part of his nose.”
The guard “from the first moment provided all the necessary assistance to the military involved, namely supervision related to medical care, psychological support, information on legal support, accommodation and transport for treatment.”
According to the statement, “this support has been maintained to date and will continue to be provided.”
The GNR indicated that any member of these security forces “is entitled to legal protection in terms of legal advice and legal assistance” provided that he intervenes in the process as an assistant, defendant, plaintiff or defendant and that follows from the performance of his duties or from -for them.
In this particular situation, the military “submitted an application on February 28” for “the grant of legal relief, believing that they were offended and intended to become assistants in the process.”
Legal aid was granted to “one of the military personnel involved” on the 15th of that month, and “the guard will appoint a defense attorney and bear the costs of the process.”
As for the other two, “they decided to become defenders before seeking legal advice from the Guard, and therefore their request was granted in part” can be read here.
This means that “the costs of the process will be paid by him, but the fees will not be paid to the already appointed defense counsel, since the legal assistance that GNR can legally provide is through lawyers (…) hired by agreement. “for an institution.
“In this case, since this is a public offense provided for by law, the Department of Justice must protect the interests of the guards and the military involved, without prejudice to the right of the victims to become assistants in the process.” , specified in GNR.
The GNR communiqué comes after the Jornal de Notícias reported on Thursday that “a group of citizens is organizing a fundraising campaign to pay legal fees and attorney’s fees” for a “couple of GNR soldiers” who were attacked in January by “a man who, several Moments ago accused of making blood alcohol levels a crime.”
On January 13, according to Lusa, three soldiers were attacked at the territorial checkpoint of Beja by a 33-year-old man who was taken to police stations for a blood alcohol test on a quantitative device, after which he was taken to the road patrol, which already showed the level of alcohol in of blood equal to or greater than the legal limit in a test performed with a quality device.
But when he was informed “that he would be detained and notified of his appearance at the State Ministry,” this man “behaved in an extremely aggressive and offensive manner towards the military,” GNR said at the time, saying that he attacked three, one of them “with a bite” that “mutilated part of the nose”.
