The CGTP expects thousands of workers from all over the country to take part in a national demonstration in Lisbon this Saturday demanding higher wages and pensions and other measures in view of the rising cost of living.
“We expect a massive participation of workers from all areas and sectors of activity, both public administration and the private sector,” CGTP leader Ana Pires said in a statement to Lusa.
According to the leader of the union, “the level of resentment in the workplace is very significant, workers are experiencing extreme hardship due to low wages” in the face of rising prices and housing costs, and “there are families who have to make daily choices.” between paying bills and putting food on the table.”
The demonstration, due to start at 15:00 in Lisbon, will bring together workers from the public administration of municipalities, education, health and public services, as well as the private sector, from industry to trade, hotels and food, among others. .
The CGTP has arranged for the transport of workers from different areas to Lisbon, for example, three trains run from Porto to the capital, the union leader said, adding that “many workers also come on their own.” bringing the family together.”
The beginning of the demonstration under the slogan “Everyone to Lisbon! A general increase in wages and pensions – a state of emergency” is scheduled for 15:00, starting from two different points in the city.
The demonstration will be organized by sector and will have two preliminary concentrations, one on the public administration side that starts with Ameiras and the other with private sector and public business sector workers that starts at the same time as Saldanha.
The workers then head towards the Marquis de Pombal, along Avenida da Liberdade towards Restauradores, where Interjovem and CGTP general secretary Isabelle Camarinha are scheduled to intervene.
On Friday, the PSP warned of traffic restrictions this Saturday on several arteries in the center of Lisbon, between the districts of Baixa, Amoreiras and Saldanha, recommending the use of public transport.
The CGTP demonstration was convened on February 17th. The union calls for an increase in wages and pensions “immediately” by at least 10% or a minimum of 100 euros for all workers, as well as the establishment of maximum price caps on essential goods and services and emergency taxation “on the colossal profits of large companies”.
The national demonstration of the CGTP takes place one day after the strike of the national public administration, organized by the United Front of Trade Unions, a structure of the CGTP.
