Research conducted in Brigham Young University in the USA has shown that those who refuse to view pornographic content are more likely to enter into a healthy and long-term relationship with their partner. Scientists believe that pornography distorts ideas about relationships and sex.
The investigation involved 3,500 people currently in relationships, with an average age of 38. 55% were in a first marriage, 23% in a cohabitation situation, 12% in a second marriage, 8% in a relationship and 2% in an open relationship.
The researchers wanted to know how often they viewed pornography and how satisfied they were with their relationships. The results showed that those who watched pornography were more likely to say they were not satisfied with dating or marriage.
“Couples should be aware that viewing pornography is a risk factor in their relationship. Any use or increase in pornography has always been associated with less stability and less satisfaction in relationships,” said Brian Willoughby, an assistant professor at the university who led the study.
The study also found that approximately one in four Americans watches porn every month. Men watch four times more than women.
