The Moroccan Federation welcomes the joint candidacy with Portugal and Spain for the 2030 World Cup

The joint candidacy of Portugal, Spain and Morocco to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup offers unique opportunities for young Africans and Europeans, Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) President Fouzi Lekjaa said on Monday.

“This is an opportunity for young people from Africa to showcase their skills to young people on the European continent,” said the Moroccan leader, who was quoted by the Spanish news agency EFE at the end of the FRMF meeting.

Fuzi Lekjaa added that “in addition to the sporting and football dimension”, the tripartite candidacy allows to expand the “capacity of young people on both sides of the Mediterranean to achieve the development of this area”.

The leader of the Moroccan federation guaranteed support for Morocco’s inclusion in Iberia’s candidacy after it was officially announced by King Mohammed VI last week, and also considered it to be a historic initiative, in line with the opinion of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and the Spanish counterpart.

“This is a historic candidacy, as for the first time the World Cup will be held on two continents. The union of the three neighboring countries will strengthen the links between Europe and Africa, as well as the entire Mediterranean, and will inspire thousands of young people from both continents to a common project, the main axis of which is the impact that football can have on sports and social development,” the statement said. FPF published March 15th.

The Portuguese body clarified that the agreement between the three countries is aimed at “making out the strongest possible candidate in terms of social, sporting, cultural and infrastructural”, and added that the decision had already been communicated to other European federations during the UEFA meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the FIFA Congress in Kigali, Rwanda.

“The application has been received very positively,” the FPF assured, adding that Morocco’s entry “does not reduce the number of headquarters that will correspond to Spain and Portugal.”

Last October, the Portuguese and Spanish federal authorities (RFEF) announced that Ukraine would include the Iberian candidacy, which the FPF promised to clarify “in time”.

The situation the country is in is at stake, such as the invasion of Russia, as well as the role of the President of the Football Federation of Ukraine, Andriy Pavelko, who is currently suspended from his duties.
