APCVD files lawsuit after alleged racist slur at Olhanense-Rabo de Peixe

The Office for the Prevention and Combating of Violence in Sports (APCVD) announced on Monday that it had initiated a process based on alleged racist slurs during the Olhanense-Rabo de Peixe game of the Portuguese Football Championship.

“Due to the news of discriminatory insults and possible manifestations of racism in the match between Sporting Olhanense and Club Desportivo Rabo de Peixe, which took place yesterday at the José Arcanjo Stadium in Olhão, in the standings of the 6th round Portugal Série D , with a possible illegal administrative offense, the Office for the Prevention and Control of Violence in Sports has initiated a process of investigating the facts and the responsibility arising from them.

On Sunday, footballer Edson from Olhanense accused Diogo Andrade, a player from Rabo de Peixe, of uttering a racist slur after being expelled when he complained, while the Azores club denied the accusation.

“Moments after he unintentionally fouled him, after another foul while we were in the box, he said ‘you black shit’,” the Algarve midfielder told Lusa, adding that at least one more a player from Rabo de Peixe would have heard the alleged insult.

The 26-year-old Portuguese-Guinean player explained that he immediately went to referee Ricardo Goix (Football Association of Setúbal) to inform him of what had happened.

“I immediately went to talk to the judge. He told me he’d be careful, but I told him it was racist and he couldn’t just say that. He gave me a yellow card and after I spoke again he gave me a second yellow card,” said Edson, who was sent off in the 38th minute of the match that ended in a 2-0 victory for Rabo de Peixe and reduction of the home team to eight players, after two more dismissals in the second half.

Due to Edson being sent off, the match was interrupted for about five minutes as the structure and other Olhanense players protested against the referee.

Diogo Andrade, Rabo de Peixe’s player, did not speak after the match, but the Azores’ sporting director denied the accusations.

“When it happened, I was on the bench, but my players told me that the term that the Olhanense player was claiming was not the term that my player said. If that happened, it would be unfortunate, but from what the players told me, no one says that the conversation was like that,” said Hernani Melo.

SAD do Olhanense president Luis Torres told Lusa that the club would file a protest in the match report and file charges with the Portuguese Football Federation.

At his request, agents of the Public Security Police (PSP) who were present at the José Arcanjo stadium in Olhão recorded the incident.
