Portuguese surfer Teresa Bonvalo lost this Monday to France’s Tessa Thiessen in the semi-finals of the Saquarema Pro, the penultimate stage of the ‘Contenders Series’, qualifying for the main course but remains poised to enter the global elite in 2023.
After beating Australian Bronte Macaulay in the quarterfinals with 9.96 points out of 20 (5.63 and 4.33 in the two best waves) against 9.73 for her opponent, four-time champion of Portugal (2014), 2015, 2020 and 2022 ) scored 9.33 points (5.83 and 3.50) and was eliminated from the final, also by a narrow margin, by a French surfer who scored 10.27 (6.10 and 4.17).
After placing third at Saquarem, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Olympian Teresa Bonvalot travels to the last round of the year in Hawaii (Haleiwa Challenger, Nov. 26 to Dec. 7) with the opportunity to compete in the World Surf League Main Race. (WSL) next season.
Terezinha were the only Portuguese to compete this Monday after Franziska Veselko was eliminated from eighth the day before.
On Saturday, Yolanda Hopkins, third in series four, and Carolina Mendez, fourth and last in heat seven, had already fallen in the second round.
The men’s national representation was reduced to Frederico Morais, who was eliminated from competition in the first round on Tuesday after finishing third in heat 5.
