Portugal 1:0 Liechtenstein

This Thursday, Portugal ended the “curse” of more than two decades of first-round European football qualification with a 4-0 thrashing of Liechtenstein at the start of Group J.

At the José Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon, goals from João Cancelo, Bernardo Silva and Cristiano Ronaldo (two, one from penalties) gave victory to rookie manager Roberto Martinez and Portugal’s first triumph of the 21st century in the first round of qualifying for the European Championship. Championship.

Before today’s match, one had to go back to 1998 to find the last victory of the national team at the beginning of the campaign, to find themselves in the final phase of the European Championship, with a new century filled with draws, as well as one of the most “defeats” and “humiliating moments” in Portuguese football .

After beating Hungary 3-1 in Budapest in September 1998, Portugal added draws with Ukraine (0-0 at Euro 2020), Cyprus (4-4 at Euro 2012) and Finland (1-1 at Euro 2008)’ at the bottom, when he was defeated in Aveiro, at Euro 2016, with Albania (1-0).

At Euro 2004, organized on the national territory, the Kinas team was exempted from participating in the qualifying stage.

Fernando Santos, European champion in 2016, and Scolari, finalist for Euro 2004 and fourth at the 2006 World Cup, marked the recent history of the national team, but both have not escaped the “curse” of the 21st century.

En route to Euro 2020, Santos drew 0-0 at Lusa with Ukraine, while Scolari played 1-1 at Euro 2008 with Finland in Helsinki.

Meanwhile, the fiasco with Albania led to a farewell to Paulo Bento (and the arrival of Fernando Santos), and a 4-4 score with Cyprus in Guimarães at Euro 2012 was another reason for the dismissal of Carlos Queiroz.

Despite a poor start, Portugal have not missed a European Championship final since 1996 in England and won the same title in 2016 in France, beating the host team in the final.
