An earthquake measuring 2.3 on the Richter scale was felt this Saturday in Povoasao on the island of Sao Miguel, the Center for Seismic Volcanic Information and Observation of the Azores (CIVISA) said.
“According to the information currently available, an earthquake with a maximum intensity of III (on the modified Mercalli scale) was felt in Povoasan,” the CIVISA website says.
According to CIVISA, the earthquake was recorded at 14:42 local time (15:42 in Lisbon) with a magnitude of 2.3 on the Richter scale, and the epicenter is located about nine kilometers south-southwest of Ribeira Quente, on the island San Miguel.
The modified Mercalli scale measures the “degrees of intensity and corresponding description” of earthquakes, and when there is an intensity III considered weak, trembling is “felt inside the house” and “hanging objects sway”, feeling “a vibration similar to that caused by the passage of heavy vehicles ”, the Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reports on its website.
