Spanish driver Marc Marquez (Honda) was fined a double long lap this Sunday to apply for next Sunday’s Argentine Grand Prix for “reckless driving” in a collision with Portugal’s Miguel Oliveira at the Portuguese Grand Prix.
The stewards felt that Márquez was “overly aggressive, which led to the crash” of Miguel Oliveira.
“This is contrary to the instructions specifically given to riders and teams” and is considered “reckless driving” creating a “danger to other competitors”.
Such behavior “violates article 1.21.2 of the regulations” of the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM) Grand Prix.
For these reasons, the stewards decided to apply a double “long lap” penalty to Marc Marquez, a penalty that obliges riders to cover most of the course.
The penalty will apply in the next race of the championship, the Argentine Grand Prix, which will take place next Sunday, 2 April.
The Portuguese MotoGP Grand Prix was the first of 21 races in the 2023 World Speed Championship.
Today’s race was won by Italy’s Francesco Bagna (Ducati), who had already won Saturday’s sprint.
The current world champion leads the championship with 37 points.
