The tanker Greta K, which caught fire off Porto on the 21st, will enter the port of Leixoines in Matosinhos on Tuesday afternoon, a port authority source told Lusa.
According to an official source from the Port Authority of Douro, Leixos and Viana do Castelo (APDL), the ship will enter Leixos through the cruise terminal.
The APDL also states that it is “gathering all forces for the success of the operation.”
On Saturday, the tanker Greta K was transferred to international waters, where it was supposed to stay for three days, the commander of the captaincy of Douro and Leixoes told Lusa.
According to Silva Rocha, the ship was parked “about 12 miles from the port of Leishoynes, which corresponds to 16 to 17 kilometers, with two harbor tugs that make it wait for an ocean tug hired by the shipowner.”
He added that in addition to having “great opportunities”, he arrives with a team that is “recovering from very difficult situations”.
“Over the next three days, outside the territorial waters, it is planned to restore part of the ship’s capacities, namely the pumping station, so that later, either in Leixoins or in Sines, the cargo can be unloaded,” the captain of the fleet explained.
Silva Rocha assured that the ship would only go to port if “all security and transfer facilities are in place to transfer fuel to the terminal next to the Port of Leishoynes”.
According to the Portuguese Navy, a fire alarm on the Maltese-flagged tanker Greta K, which was sailing about one and a half miles from the coast, about three kilometers, near Praia dos Ingléses, in Foz do Douro, was transmitted about 15:30 on the 21st at the Lisbon Naval Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC).
On board the ship were 19 crew members, all citizens of the Philippines, 16 of whom were evacuated in recent days. The ship is carrying “diesel and aircraft fuel (jet fuel)”.
