TV presenter and comedian Paul O’Grady died Tuesday night at the age of 67. According to her husband, André Portasio, in a statement that quotes BBCPaul died unexpectedly, “but peacefully.”
Paul O’Grady rose to prominence in the 1990s when he gave birth to transvestite Lily Savage and began hosting the Blanket Blank program on BBC One.
The husband adds that he will be missed by “loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who appreciated his humor, intelligence and compassion.”
Statement issued on behalf of the Queen Consort and quoted BBCreports that Camille was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Paul O’Grady, with whom she worked closely to support the work of the Battersea Dog and Cat Sanctuary, and whose warm heart and infectious humor brightened the lives of many people.”
Paul O’Grady was born in Birkenhead, UK in 1955. His mother’s maiden name was Savage, which may have inspired his drag queen name Lily Savage, which he began using in the 1970s.
Over the course of his career, O’Grady has received a Bafta Television Award, a British Comedy Award and a National Television Award for The Paul O’Grady Show.
In 1974, the TV star had a daughter from her friend Diane Jansen. He later married a Portuguese woman in 1977 but divorced in 2005.
She married her current husband in London in 2017.
