A memorial to the martyrs of the Bengali mother tongue movement, located next to Porto Cathedral, was vandalized on Wednesday afternoon. The Bangladeshi community in Porto considers this an act of racism.
On his social network Facebook, the president of the association of the community, Alam Kazol, posted photos of what the memorial turned out to be, accompanied by the phrase “I’m sorry about what happened in Porto.” The post went viral, with many comments disproving the act. “This is a cursed year”, “very sad”, “our pride is broken” – these are just some of the comments on the publication of Alam Kazol.
The case was reported to PSP, which is currently investigating whether there were racial motives. In the afternoon, several members of Porto’s Bangladeshi community gathered at the Memorial, mourning the situation.
Remember that the Memorial is a tribute to the Bengalis who were killed by Pakistani forces in 1952. It was opened in 2016.
