Garbage collection and street cleaning guidelines for Arroyosa in Lisbon will be available in five languages in addition to Portuguese. Information in English, Bengali, Nepali, Hindi and Mandarin reaches residents and merchants on Avenida Almirante Reis this Friday. The initiative comes from the parish council, which will be distributing pamphlets with rules and penalties for non-compliance, and wants “more concern” for city hygiene.
“The integration of migrants for the safety of all has been one of my main goals, which has become even more justified after the tragedy that occurred at the Ismaili Center last Tuesday,” says the president of the Arroyos Council. Madalena Natividade meets with representatives of foreign communities (represented by Bangladesh, India, Nepal, China, Pakistan and Brazil) at the start of the awareness campaign.
The faces of the Arroios Limpa campaign are migrants. “It is worth watching the videos of Arroyos residents of different nationalities who lead by example and call for street cleaning, to whom I am very grateful for their readiness and responsibility,” adds the mayor.
The main advice is to “don’t throw trash on the floor, pick up your pet’s waste, use dumpsters properly, and report instances of trash buildup or legal disposal,” the statement said. Under the Waste Regulation of the Lisbon Chamber, fines for non-compliance range from €2,500 (individuals) to €22,500 (legal entities).
