The Lisbon Chamber has given a week to about two dozen residents of Marvila to give up the vegetable gardens they have been growing for over 30 years. The municipal land next to Rua do Vale Formoso de Cima will serve as a building site for the construction of affordable housing.
Residents were informed on the 24th and are due to leave this Saturday, April 1st. Many crops sown will not be harvested.
“If they had warned us in advance, we would not have even begun to sow. They could give us until June to harvest,” he says to managing director Manuel Costa, who fears losing onions, potatoes and other crops. The CM asked the House questions about the reason for the notice given with little notice and whether it was possible to save the crop, but the autarky did nothing.
However, the Chamber ensures that the construction project in question provides for the establishment of community gardens with water points and ancillary buildings, and that residents who grow informal gardens are contacted and expressed interest.
KM residents assured that they were contacted only in order to leave the gardens.
