US overtakes Nigeria as largest natural gas supplier in first quarter

The United States of America (USA) was the top national supplier of natural gas with a 46.3% share, overtaking Nigeria, which accounted for 31.9% of supplies, according to data released this Monday by Adene.

“In the first quarter of this year, the United States led the supply of natural gas to Portugal with a share of 46.3%, followed by Nigeria (31.9%), gas imported through interconnections with Spain (12.7%) and Russia (9. 2%),” the Adene-Agency for Energy reported.

According to the organization, in the first quarter of last year, when Russia invaded Ukraine, exacerbating the energy crisis in Europe, “Nigeria was the leader in natural gas supplies with a share of 56.0%, followed by the United States (32.9%), Russia. (6.2%) and Trinidad and Tobago (4.9%)”.

In the first half of last year, according to Galp, interruptions in the supply of natural gas from Nigeria to the Iberian Peninsula cost the Portuguese oil company 135 million euros.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Duarte Cordeiro visited Nigeria last year with then Energy Minister Joao Galamba, current Minister of Infrastructure, with the Nigerian government guaranteeing supply contracts.

However, at a conference in September, Duarte Cordeiro acknowledged that there is a risk of default, which could lead to a change in the price of this raw material in Portugal.

At the same time, the official also said that the country is seeking to diversify its natural gas suppliers.

Natural gas consumption in the first quarter of the year was 12,895 gigawatt-hours (GWh), down 19.6% from the same period, according to Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN) data released this Monday and analyzed by the Energy Observatory.

During the same period, the electricity market, which corresponds to natural gas consumed by combined cycle power plants for electricity generation, accounted for approximately 33% of consumption, with the remaining 67% destined for the conventional market.

During the same period last year, the electricity market accounted for 44%, while the traditional market accounted for 56%.
