Sporting president Frederico Varandas suggested on Monday that, 18 points behind leaders Benfica in Football League One, the goal of the season now included qualification to the Champions League, but praised the work of Rubén Amorim.
In an interview with Sporting TV, the Lions leader lamented the team’s lack of regularity at the start of the season and stressed that he hoped Amorim would remain at the club until the end of his contract, which ends in 2026.
“We were not consistent, especially in the early stages of the season, and we paid dearly for that. Now we want the Champions League and we believe it is possible,” said Frederico Varandas in an interview in which he praised the quality of Sporting’s football. several times, despite the fact that at the moment he no longer has a chance to fight for the national title.
Despite the club being “much better prepared for life without the Champions League”, Varandas admitted that qualifying for Europe’s most important club competition continues to matter on the “accounts”.
“If the Champions League does not take place, we will have to have more income from the sale of players. But today, Sporting are much better prepared for this scenario, ”he stressed.
The president of the Lisbon emblem says Sporting now “plays like a big team and can win any game”, a paradigm that has changed in recent years thanks to Rubén Amorim and the players and sports management led by Hugo Viana.
“It gives me confidence in the present and in the future. I’m counting on Reuben until 2026. He is one of the best coaches in the world, thanks to him Sporting has grown significantly in the quality of the game and thus, indirectly, the club,” he said.
It is for this reason that, despite Sporting’s 100-year history, Varandas agrees with Amorim, who recently celebrated the club’s second title in six years as something positive.
“Given the recent past, I agree. But I know that Ruben fights for the title of champion every day,” he stressed.
In European competition, Varandash praised the victory and Pedro Gonçalves’ “epic” goal against Arsenal that left the Lions in the Europa League quarter-finals, in which they now face Juventus, the rival the president has suggested. “to be very difficult.”
Varandas also considered that thanks to the regularity presented, Benfica is the “fair leader” of the I League, and promised to maintain the policy of betting on the formation of Sporting next season.
“What we can promise is a competitive team at all levels,” he concluded.
