Tiger Woods is set to make it to The Masters for the 23rd time this week.
However, golf’s biggest name struggled on the first day at Augusta, falling far behind the top leaders and threatening to miss the final 36 holes.
The rules for the cut-off, which excludes the players with the most points before the stroke play tournament closes, vary slightly from Major to Major, which is how it works in The Masters.
What is the haircut for The Masters 2023?
At The Masters, the players with the lowest scores of 50 after the first 36 holes, including all 50th-place runners, advance to the last two rounds.
The rules have been revised several times since the introduction of 36 holes in 1957.
More recently, between 2013 and 2019, players with the lowest 50 points were joined by players within 10 strokes of the leader – the current system was implemented in 2020.
Augusta’s average cut score is 148.44 in the first two rounds (just over 4 over par) – the lowest score of 143 (1 under par) was in 2020 and the highest of 154 (10 over par) was good enough to get to continue playing at the 1982 Masters.
With a relatively small course of 88 golfers participating in the Masters 2023, most golfers will make it to Saturday.
After the first day in Augusta, the cut line was 1 over par, but we won’t know the exact number until the end of Friday’s game.
What do The Masters editing rules mean for Tiger Woods?
Tiger Woods cut 22 consecutive times in Augusta, only one of Fred Par and Gary Player’s combined records.
He threw 2 over par on a difficult first day in Augusta, well behind early leaders Brooks Kepka, Victor Hovland and John Ram.
That took him out of the 2023 provisional limit but within reach – other big names facing knockouts in the second round included Bryson DeChambeau and Sergio Garcia.

As he struggled through the long opening day, there were times when the thought of him being able to play his last game clung to the limping Tiger Woods. The ghosts in the third, fifth, and seventh places seemed like a burden to his soul. The bird at eight was brought back at eleven, and was nine behind the leader created by teammate Hovland.
With 10 yards to go, a birdie on the 15th banker seemed unlikely, to say the least, but Woods found the rhythm of his flat-topped youth fame to rock it. When 16 was followed by a bird, you wouldn’t have guessed that scaffolding was holding his right leg together.
He went pretty well to the 17th tee. Another shot landed on the last one, but it wasn’t the dull Woods signing for 74, it was the warrior he had always been, weakened but not yet defeated.
