Nora Geruto, 3000m hurdles world champion, suspended for doping

Kazakh athlete Nora Jeruto, world champion in the 3,000m hurdles, has been suspended for anomalies in her biological passport, the Athletics Integrity Authority (AIU) said on Friday.

Jeruto, who was born in Kenya and holds Kazakh citizenship, is responsible for the use of a prohibited substance or method in this process, said the AIU, which investigates doping cases in athletics.

At stake, according to the AIU, is the data collected in the biological passport of a 27-year-old athlete who is not allowed to compete while the process is underway.

Jeruto became the African Champion in 2016 and the Diamond League in 2021, representing Kenya on both occasions.

He then went on to become a naturalized Kazakh, missing out on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics due to the process, having won the first track and field gold medal for the Central Asian nation at Oregon 2022 last year.

At that time in Eugene, he broke the World Championship record of 08.53.02 minutes, the third best time in history, putting himself in the shoes of Ethiopians Verkuha Getacheu and Mekides Abebe, who finished second and third respectively.
