Masters 2023: LIV golf rebel Phil Mickelson back in the spotlight after he ‘flicked’ in Augusta

Look who came to the party. With a second round of 69, three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson stole the table unnoticed for four under par. And it seems that with that unexpected overhead sight he remains eight hits better than league leader Brooks Cap with 12 under par, Mickelson has abandoned stealth as a weekend strategy.

“I’m about to burst into tears. You won’t believe it. Look at the scores. But I’m playing like yesterday, hitting the ball well, turning 65, 66 into 77. Who knows when he’ll click? It might click tomorrow. Part of it slows my mind and allows it happens and then it clicks. But that’s the biggest problem in the game, not the enforcement.”

Mickelson retired after joining the LIV Golf League. His game has shrunk because of his waistline, which somehow blurs the light of this once-radiant golfer. With his ill-fated entry into the radioactive zone that became the LIV Golf, Mickelson stripped his legacy of luster, his unparalleled grand victory at the PGA Championship at the age of 50 was not enough to protect him from the slingshots and darts of the righteous.

As Koepka testifies, nothing beats Augusta National’s rescue force. Mickelson, who is revered for his healing properties, describes this week’s experience as spiritual. “If you love golf, coming here will make you feel appreciated for this wonderful game and the gratitude you have.

“This tournament, this course gives everyone something to strive for. If you are a child and dream of playing at the Masters and want to win it, then you have something to strive for. It was for me. Play on a golf course where history is made every year. That’s what this course does for me and I think for all golfers.”

While Mickelson doesn’t expect Cap to explode, he cares enough about the Augusta National legend to believe anything is possible in the next two days.

“There are a lot of crazy things going on here. We see a lot of low scores and then we see a lot of guys relapse. You never know. I didn’t expect that from him, he plays so well, but I also think other players have a low round. So guys can catch it when they get hot.

Mickelson in full plumage filled the weekend with a retro vibe, adding a completely unexpected dimension when the first whistle blew. The old man that evokes the sympathy of this crowd is undoubtedly Tiger Woods. With two over par and seven points remaining, Woods could still get through the rest of his round to follow Mickelson into the weekend, but only as a token presence.

Mickelson, on the other hand, came for the W even though the rest of us didn’t care.

“I’m looking forward to the weekend. I know I’ve scored, I’m playing better than I’ve scored and I’m looking forward to putting together the round that I know I’m capable of and when I do, it will really be funny. .”
