The Greek press reported on Sunday that Polish referee Pawel Rachowski and his team, apparently drunk, rioted on a flight to Greece, where they were supposed to referee the match.
The refereeing team, heading to Athens, was going to referee the match between AEK (first place in the Greek championship) and Aris from Thessaloniki (fifth). It is customary in Greece for foreign referees to participate in league matches.
The referee and assistants were removed from the match by the Hellenic Football Association and replaced by Greek referees.
Rachovski, who initially went missing, contradicts the version being circulated by the Greek media. “I was attacked by a Panathinaikos fan. He said he was going to destroy me in the press. I was spat on and attacked, the man was drunk and aggressive. We wanted to go to the police, but the authorities told us to spend the night at the police station, ”the Pole justifies himself.
The game took place and ended with the victory of AEK with a score of 3:1.
