Cartoonist Al Jaffee dies at 102 in Manhattan

American cartoonist Al Jaffee, best known for his work in the satirical magazine Mad and retired at the age of 99, died on Monday in Manhattan at the age of 102 from multiple organ failure, according to his granddaughter Fani Thomson.

Ziggy Pig and Stupid Seal are fictional comic book characters with talking animals created by a cartoonist for Marvel Comics’ 1940s predecessor, Timely Comics, during a period referred to by fans and historians as the Golden Age of comics.

Jeffy was also known for his Grumpy Answers to Stupid Questions, which delivered on what the title promised. A comic from the 1980s depicts a man on a fishing boat with a clearly bent reel. “Are you going to fish?” the wife asks. “No,” he replies, “I’m going to jump into the water and marry a beautiful one.”
