This Thursday, the Pelé Foundation campaigned to have the word “Pelé” included in the Portuguese dictionary as a synonym for “greatness”, “unsurpassed” and “unique” in honor of the Brazilian footballer who passed away on December 29th. .
“This is a campaign that pays tribute to the king of football by demanding that Pelé be glorified and immortalized in a unique way: to become an entry in the dictionary. Join this movement!” the foundation explains, referring to the campaign that aims to be “the best definition of the greatest of all time.”
“‘Leather'[Adjetivo]: “More than everyone else; A reference to greatness; unsurpassed; Synonymous with superiority; Unique” is a sentence that the foundation wants to see included in the dictionary.
To this end, a signature collection website (pelenodicionario.com.br) was opened, where a digital form was provided to the public with which people can support the initiative.
The campaign is backed by Santos, the club where Pelé spent most of his sports career, and Globo, Brazil’s most powerful media group.
Considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time, Edson Arantes do Nascimento “Pelé” died on December 29, 2022 at the age of 82 as a result of multiple organ failure due to colon cancer he had suffered from during the previous year.
So far, he is the only player to have won three World Cups with his national team: Sweden 1958, Chile 1962 and Mexico 1970.
