Spanish Football League President Says Barcelona Colleague ‘Clarified Nothing’ About Payments To Former Referee

The President of the Spanish Football League said today that his Barcelona colleague Joan Laporta “didn’t clarify anything” about the payments to the former referee accused of by Barcelona in order to obtain a sporting advantage.

“Most clubs did not understand these explanations. [Laporta] didn’t clarify anything. He claimed that he never tried to buy referees or influence them, but most of the clubs said that this is not normal, that these payments are wrong and that an investigation should be carried out, ”Javier Tebas told reporters after an extraordinary meeting. clubs from La Liga who served to hear the explanations of the president of the blaugrana.

According to Tebas, Laporta “summarized what he had already said at the press conference” last Monday.

Two days ago, the president of FC Barcelona denounced the “smear campaign” against the club, rocked two months ago by the football refereeing scandal, assuring that the Catalan organization “never did anything to gain sporting advantages”.

In March, FC Barcelona, several of its former managers and former head of the refereeing team José Negreira were charged with corruption, breach of trust and false business documents in a case involving large payments to a former football referee.

The prosecutor’s office filed a formal complaint with the Barcelona Court of Instruction No. 1 against the club as a legal entity, as well as against its former presidents, namely Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosella.

The case arose after an investigation launched by the Barcelona prosecutor’s office about a year ago, which shows that the former head of the Spanish arbitration received almost seven million euros through the company for alleged verbal consultations with the club between 2001 and 2001. 2018.

This case, in which the Catalan club has been consistently linked to a business corruption crime, has been merged with another following a complaint filed in recent weeks by former referee and current video referee Estrada Fernández against Negreira and Dasnil 95, for sports corruption.

Alleged tax violations committed by Negreira’s company in May 2022 revealed payments received by the former Vice President of the Arbitrators’ Technical Commission.

According to the Spanish court, Barcelona “maintained a strictly confidential verbal agreement” with José Negreira, so that he “in exchange for money, performed actions directed in favor of Barcelona in the decisions of the referees” in their matches.
