According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the municipalities of Sant Bras de Alportel, Tavira and Castro Marim in the Faro region this Monday pose a very high risk of fire in the countryside.
IPMA has also placed the municipalities of Lagos, Portimão, Monchique, Silves, Loulé, Alcoutim (Faro) and Almodóvar (Beja) at high fire risk.
The rest of the country poses a moderate and reduced danger this Monday, but is expected to increase from Tuesday.
According to the Institute for Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), 2,162 forest fires have occurred since the beginning of the year, and 7,439 hectares have burned in rural areas.
The fire danger defined by IPMA has five levels, from minimum to maximum.
Calculations are made based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and precipitation over the past 24 hours.
IPMA is predicting periods of very cloudy skies in the north and center for the continent this Monday, with partly cloudy or clear skies in the south.
Minho and Douro Litoral are also expected to experience light rain, generally light winds, patches of fog or morning mist, and a slight increase in temperature.
The minimum temperature will range from 8 degrees Celsius (in Braganza) to 16 (in Faro), and the maximum – from 19 (in Guarda) to 28 (in Santarém).
