From today, traffic in the center of Lisbon and coastal areas is prohibited.

Traffic is restricted from this Wednesday and for an indefinite period in the coastal area and Baixa de Lisboa due to various works, with the City Council proposing alternatives for traffic from Alcantara to Parque das Nacoins.

According to the Lisbon City Council, in the coastal area and on Avenida 24 de Julio, between Avenida Infante Santo and Avenida Musinho de Albuquerque, general traffic in both directions will be prohibited, and access will be restricted to residents and workers.

In the Baixa area, vehicles over 3.5 tons can only travel at night, from 20:00 to 08:00, including vehicles providing trade in the area, excluding public transport vehicles such as buses from Rails.

According to Lisbon Chamber’s mobility adviser, Anacoreta Correia, “the plan is dynamic” with no end in sight at the moment and will change as work is completed.

However, some rules, such as the restriction for vehicles with a daily weight of more than 3.5 tons, should continue after the end of the work.

In order to divert traffic away from restricted areas, the Council proposes, as an alternative, to use the “5th ring road” to cross the route that starts from Alcantara – Avenida Infante Santo – Estrela – Avenida Alvarez Cabral – Rato – – Rua Alexandre Herculano – Conde Redondo – Avenida Almirante Reis – Praça do Chile – Rua Morais Soares – Praça Paiva Couceiro – Avenida Mouzinho de Albuquerque – Parque das Nações.

Among the works that will cause restrictions are the expansion of the Lisbon metro, the implementation of the Drainage Plan to avoid flooding in the capital, the restoration of the sewer network and the repair of roads.

In the area of Rua da Prata and Alameda Infante D. Enrique, traffic is already being regulated.

Restricted traffic areas will be signposted and police officers will raise awareness and explain the new rules to drivers.
